The countdown to the opening round of the 2012 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship begins in earnest this week as the World’s best enduro racers prepare themselves for the long awaited series opener in Genoa, Italy. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting and challenging indoor enduro competitions, on Saturday, November 26, this long standing event will again welcome a distinguished list of enduro riders all ready to give their all in the hope of making a winning start to the 2012 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship.

Formerly known as the FIM Indoor Enduro World Championship, the new for 2012 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship will bring together riders from all across Europe with notable additions from the United States. Topping the list of expected European front runners is Poland’s Taddy Blazusiak, the rider widely regarded as the World’s best indoor enduro racer. Reigning FIM World Indoor Enduro Champion Blazusiak, who recently secured a third consecutive AMA Endurocross title, knows what it takes to win in Genoa despite only managing to place third overall last November.

Mika Ahola is one of the few riders to beat Taddy and he did it in Genoa last year

Among those determined to finish ahead of Blazusiak are Joakim Ljunggren and Mika Ahola – the two riders that placed behind the Polish champion in the 2011 FIM Indoor Enduro World Championship. The 2011 FIM E3 Enduro World Champion Ahola will be hoping for a repeat of his Genoa victory twelve months ago, knowing all too well that both speed and consistency are needed in order to win. Ljunggren, who emerged as one of the stand out performers of the 2011 indoor series, has his sights set on just one thing – winning the 2012 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship.

FIM Enduro World Championship regulars including FIM Junior Enduro World Champion Jeremy Joly (France), former World Champion Ivan Cervantes (Spain), Rodrig Thain (France), Cristobal Guerrero (Spain), and leading Italian rider Alex Salvini will all play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the event’s results, as will British competitors Dougie Lampkin and Jonny Walker. US racers Cody Webb and Ricky Dietrich, who both have considerable experience when it comes to indoor enduro competition, will be focused on mixing it up with their European rivals and earning themselves an end-of-night podium result.

Italian Alex Salvini will be out to impress his locals

From three qualifying heats and two last chance qualifying races, sixteen riders will proceed into the nights finals. With three finals each offering a maximum of twenty points the Genoa event is set to deliver explosive racing and a memorable start to the 2012 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship.

Jonny riding a KTM 250 XC instead of his usual 300 showed good promise in the practice sessions and set third fastest time behind Cody Webb and Taddy Blazusiak. After practice each rider takes just one hot lap to decide gate position for the qualifying heats. A slight mistake in the rock section dropped him to sixth fastest but still a good position to gain a decent starting position in one of the three qualifying groups. The start in Vegas is very short and directly into a 180-degree bend, almost every race was won from a hole-shot and as the track is so tight and gnarly and passing difficult the start is everything.

In Jonny’s heat race he got second pick on the gate behind series number 2 KTM’s Mike Brown, Brown grabbed the holeshot with Jonny in hot pursuit, these two pulled a small gap on the rest of the field and it looked like Jonny would easily qualify, but stalling in the rocks he dropped to 4th positions and could only return to 3rd by the flag, unfortunately he just missed the cut for a direct transfer to the main as only top 2 go to the final.

So now we had to make the LCQ race struggling from a bad start Jonny put in several solid laps during the later stages to move up to 2nd and right behind the leader, good enough to join the nights two final races.

With qualifying from the LCQ it meant Jonny was almost last to join the start line and had to start from second row, he hoped to squeeze up the inside on the first turn, but other riders cut him off and he got hooked up in the tyres, but he pushed hard from almost last to each lap pick riders off and eventually made 6th position.

In the second final he was not so lucky, in the first turn other riders crashed and JW got caught up with them, another start from the back and several other small incidents meant he could do no better than a disappointing 10th.

Jonny Walker KTM 250 XC “ I have really enjoyed my time in USA, I must give special thanks to Kurt Caselli and KTM USA for giving me this chance, I hope I can come back next year and make a better result, my riding was good but I just suffered with more than my fair share of mistakes, the racing is so close and aggressive out here and everybody is making mistakes, its a case of limiting them “

Julian Stevens Team manager “This was a great experience for JW and excellent preparation for the Indoor World Championship, it would have been nice to have been closer to Taddy and we never got chance to race against him, he was on top form and we congratulate him for another championship, I hope that in Italy this weekend when Jonny is back on his familiar 300 he can be fighting for the podium, thanks to all the American supporters and helpers who made us all feel so welcome”

Next Race: FIM SuperEnduro, Geona, Italy November 26th

All eyes will very much focused on run away championship leader KTM’s Taddy Blazusiak as he will attempt to not only lock down the Endurocross championship but do it in style by claiming the perfect season. Having won every round of the championship so far, Taddy will face his biggest challenge yet as the Expert class will race two main events in Las Vegas providing the perfect twist to an already action packed season. Taddy has dominated EnduroCross the past two seasons but winning every event will be a tough task even for Blazusiak. Mike Brown, his KTM teammate still has a mathematical shot at the title but he will need to get his first win to have any chance of stealing the crown. And GEICO Honda’s Geoff Aaron has won a race each of the last two years and he too will be fighting to keep that streak alive. Making his debut in Endurocross will be British rider Johnny Walker. The KTM backed rider has put together an incredible season, third in the mighty extreme Erzberg Enduro, second at the Red Bull’s Sky to Sea in Turkey along with Gold medals in the ISDE, Walker will be hoping he too can his presence felt under the lights of Vegas.

But there’s more!

For those that fail to make the cut for the Expert main, they still have a chance to take home a big pot of cash but will race for it in the dark! The Baja Designs night race is a must see and will again take place at this weekend’s GEICO AMA EnduroCross Finals, presented by Lucas Oil. The Baja 1000 and other desert races are best known for night racing with high performance lighting systems guiding the way. For this special event, the expert riders that just miss qualifying for the double main events from the Last Chance Qualifiers will be invited to mount up Baja Designs battery powered Diablo light kits and race with the Orleans Arena lights turned off. They will duke it out for the $500 winner take all prize.

The lights will be in Vegas dimmed for the Baja Design's night race

Having opened the series at the X-Games back in May, the Freegun Underwear backed Women’s class returns to bring together the largest and most talented field of women ever to compete on an EnduroCross course. When the women were given their own class at the X Games Enduro X, some were critical of their performance but the crowd gave them the standing ovations that they deserved. And now more top female riders have stepped up to the challenge. For the Open Amateur, TrialsCross and Vet class racers that have earned a chance to compete with top finishes at the regional qualifiers, this will be their opportunity to with the coveted AMA Grand Championships of EnduroCross.

With the final round left to run, all bets are on!

But Factory FMF/KTM rider Mike Brown earned a strong second place finish to keep the championship alive until the finale in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The championship will now be decided in the final double round in Las Vegas in November and it remains to be seen if KTM’s extreme Enduro specialist from Poland can retain the title and his perfect results.

It's six wins from six starts for Taddy in Endurocross

Blazusiak and Brown both started strong turning the fastest hot laps of the night to secure first gate pick in their heats. Brown went on to win heat number one, Blazusiak heat number two and Justin Soule took the win in the final heat.

In the main event, Blazusiak got off to a powerful start by launching his KTM to the front of the pack to nail the holeshot. Brown came around the first corner in second place and began a battle with Soule for the position. The two swapped positions a few times before Brown made an aggressive move to make the pass stick. Brown was able to keep Blazusiak in his sights for the first half of the race before Taddy turned up the heat, stretched the lead and grabbed yet another victory in what has been an epic season for the Polish rider. Brown went on to finish second and Geoff Aaron earned third. KTM riders soaked up five of the top 10 places in this exciting competition that is growing in popularity with every event.

Taddy: “It was pretty much another great night for me. When you know that you’re getting close to being able to wrap-up a championship then it can be hard to stay relaxed and ride at your best, but I didn’t feel like I was under any real pressure. Everything went really well again and I have to say a huge thanks to everyone in the KTM team. I felt good on the track and my Hot Lap session went well, which set me up well for the night really. It’s kind of weird knowing that your team-mate is the only rider that can beat you in the championship, but I just stayed focused on doing my on thing and trying to win my heat race while learning the track. The main event was really good. I got a great start, which always helps, and being exactly where I needed to be meant that I could just focus on the track for the opening laps and then start to push a little harder. I knew Mike would be riding hard to make sure he finished top three but after a few laps I opened up a pretty good lead and kept myself upright and out of trouble. I’m really looking forward to Vegas now. It’s going to be interesting having two finals but I know my bike’s working great and that I’m in good physical conditions so I’ll be ready. It helps knowing that I have a 53 point lead in the championship.”

The series next heads to Las Vegas for a double format main event. Brown is the only rider that has a chance to challenge Blazusiak for the title in Vegas.

Blazusiak got the day started by setting the fastest time during the Hot Laps, which puts the riders on the track one at a time for a single lap against the clock. GEICO Honda’s Aaron finished second followed by Lucas Oil/Rockstar backed Colton Haaker.

Blazusiak, Beta’s Cody Webb and Haaker each won their respective heat races to take get the best picks for the main event. Webb and Aaron had a great battle for the win in heat two and most of the qualifying races had great action.

Aaron and Brown got aggressive on the final start of the night to push Blazusiak to third but then the Polish rider launched past both of them to take the lead through one of the difficult rock sections and seemed ready to take off. Brown and Aaron stayed close and on lap three, Blazusiak crashed in the Matrix, which is a difficult section of closely spaced logs and Brown took over the lead. Brown held the position for over a lap but then gave it up to Blazusiak but still stayed close. Brown then crashed in the Matrix and allowed Aaron to get by. Webb also challenged Brown for third for a few laps before losing touch and finished fourth just ahead of GEICO Honda’s Kyle Redmond and Monster Kawasaki’s Justin Soule, who was fighting back from a derailed chain. Stillwell Performance backed Kevin Rookstook finished seventh ahead of Colton Haaker, Bobby Prochnau and Kyle Calderini. Gary Sutherlin finished 11th after running as high as fifth but a bike problem dropped him from contention near the end of the main.
